First look at Pownce
July 7, 2007 – 3:19 pmAfter signing up for it a few weeks back, today I received an invite to register for Pownce. Overall Pownce is just another way of exchanging information between friends. Information such as links, files, events. These are the basics that you get with a regular account.
The subscription based service offering comes in two flavors, Basic and Pro Account. While the Basic Account is free, the Pro Account will cost you (only) $20 per year. What does the Pro Account get you?
- Ability to send bigger files. Up to 100MB.
- Eliminate Ads.
- A cool badge next to your name.
If you are anything like me, you would ask the question of what is so special about Pownce? I can already do all the things that the Pro Account offers. If I have a blog, I will post my events on there, or send it through Facebook. As for eliminating Ads, Firefox being the browser of my choice, there exist various Ad Blocking add-ons that should (hopefully) take care of the ads. As far as the badge goes, woop tee doo!
What is pretty nifty about Pownce though, is their Desktop Application. Built using Adobe AIR (formerly codenamed Apollo), it adds a tiny bit of “cool-ness” factor. Hopefully after using it on a regular basis in coming weeks it will become clear whether this is something that will render useless or “change the world”.
Cheers!
