Ubuntu, VirtualBox and Windows 7 Beta

For the past three years I have been living a Microsoft free lifestyle. A Microsoft free lifestyle means I use none of their software products within my personal life. Unfortunately, I cannot change the choices that my employer makes, I wouldn’t want to. This does not mean that I have totally abolished using Microsoft Windows. This simply means that I made a choice to use Free Software as much as possible, unless there is a specific need/requirement for me to go the propreitary route.

As such, I’ve maintained a Virtual version of Windows XP SP2, which I port around on both Linux and Macbook. The primary reason for this is to do some development using .NET and SQL2005. Hence my VirtualBox image being named, XPDevSP2.

With Microsoft recently making Windows 7 Beta available for all to download and tinker with, I decided to give it a whirl under VirtualBox on Linux (Ubuntu 8.10). My primary workstation is a Ubuntu machine and I use a Macbook for portability around the house. Both of which run the same instance of the XPDevSP2 virtual image.

The following screenshots and video outline the configuration settings that I used to install Windows 7 Beta in VirtualBox and a video of the booting and general UI of the new beta operating system. If you are an individual interested in trying to do the same with your Linux machine, this will help you. If you have any questions about any of the configurations, feel free to send them to me via electronic mail.

Cheers!

I have been windows free on my home and office computers for 3 years now. The hard part is that I own a computer repair shop. I hate having to use proprietary software but I have to everyday. :(

Hey, I just installed Windows 7 as well. Haven’t had a chance to play around, but wanted to let you know, VirutalBox 2.1.2 has support for Windows 7 built-in.
