À Vikingsson: Wi-Fi tethering does not come with Android 1.6. It comes with rooted phones. It is the rooting that allows the use of Wi-Fi that way.

I was about to mention it myself when I remembered that fact.

So an official 1.6 release would not help for that.

Well, for starters, all the latest Google applications are 1.6 or latest. Google itself does not even support 1.5 anymore.

So:
- Google Maps
- Google Goggles
- Google gestures (whatever its name)

I think that it speaks for itself that Google think the 1.5 SDK is too primitive to develop great software.

You should also consider that some developers release 1.5 versions that have less features than their 1.6 counterparts. The software does exist, but in a limited sort of way. A few examples:

- Calendar Pad
- Toggle Settings

I know there are many more, but I don't remember their names, as i don't use them.

Finally, there is the lack of features, such as voice dialing.

As an old fat finger user that hates inputting anything on little phones I have come to depend on Shapewriter which is similar to Swype. This is a 1.6+ app so goes on my list.

The stock OS didn't seem too horrible but it got old fast. I missed 1.6 too much and have gone back to a non Sense 1.6 release. What is better?
. Bluetooth that actually works. The stock 1.5 is unreliable at least for the BT devices I own. Much better on 1.6
. Maps 4. Way better than the now abandoned 3.x. Handy is the voice input. It's handheld so I need it fast and easy to use.
. Integrated tethering. I pay for a data plan that allows me to tether but my choices are limited and buggy on the stock (you mean I need yet another USB driver on a laptop? no thanks). Now I have a no hassle USB and WiFI tether.
. Generally a smoother experience with more choices that I want.

1.6+ applications aren't that much of a problem to me. I do miss latest Maps a lot, but I can live without it. What matters to me is the features missing and more importantly the overall feel of the phone. My Dream, which should be slower and have more frequent charge cycles can last for two days without a charge and runs so smoothly. It has CM. The Magic experience is exactly the same as the Dream (currently), except for the better apps I have on the Dream. As to Great Sense UI, I prefer Advanced Launcher to it. Going far, root apps is a must for me. I will never get a phone (unless free :D) that I can't gain superuser access on. I love the X10. I've been anticipating it for a long while, but I won't buy it unless it can be rooted.

So just what I think and it looks like I'm switching to Wind. Where art thou, N1?

Puleen, what I find most odd about the way Android OS is being handled is the partnership of Carriers and Manufacturers. This unfortunately runs against the philosophy of OpenSource. Essentially with the Android model, Rogers still completely controls the user experience even though they are only there to provide connectivity. In an odd way, the iPhone is better when it comes to that.

The only Android phone that I really see coming close to giving the end user the open source benefits is the NexusOne which unfortunately isn't available for the Rogers frequency yet.

All that being said, I commend your guys efforts in bringing a bit of openness to this platform on Rogers.

Bryan, you are correct in stating that the issue isn't just limited to application compatibility and I agree that having an updated OS should be an absolute must.

However, the point I am trying to make here is that not having an updated OS impacts users who want to use several applications available in the market to be more productive and/or efficient in their day to day life. Moreover, developers who spend their precious time and creativity to develop innovative applications would be at a disadvantage, because their application does not have the reach it would if all devices were running on the latest OS.

It isn't even the application compatibility that has become an issue for me.

However, I find it odd that we are being prevented from getting the latest OS, just because of who manufactured the phone.

I would gladly pay $10 for an upgrade to cover any costs incurred. I'm sure we all would. But we have no options to begin with!
