Yesterday around 9:00 pm EST Rogers released an update for the HTC Magic and Dream devices which fixes the recent 911/GPS bug. You can find out more about this bug in my previous posts. This update does not actually update the phones to a newer Android platform, but simply provides a patch which fixes the 911/GPS bug. Last week Rogers announced that the HTC Dream device had an issue with the GPS hindering the ability to complete 911 calls. In a nutshell the issue with Dream was that if the GPS is enabled, users lost the ability to dial 911. As a result Rogers released an SMS message to all of their HTC Dream customers to notify them of this bug and also on steps for them to take to disable GPS so as to maintain the ability to dial 911. Over the last few months a group of individuals on AndroidForums.com and IWantMyOnePointSix.com have been actively demanding Rogers and HTC to provide an update for the HTC Magic and Dream. You can follow the results through some of my previous posts on here.
After a successful win with Rogers and HTC, the time has come for us to take this fight to LG in the hopes that they can provide us with more information, not just canned responses, about their plans on supporting those consumers who purchased their Eve mobile phone which also runs on the Android platform. Before you all start to jump up and down, take this with a grain of salt. I have started to believe in the saying “seeing is believing” more and more. This whole blunder between HTC and Rogers not supporting the Magic / Dream users by not providing Android 1.6 update has left an extremely bad taste in my mouth and others.
